What to Do When you Lose Your Wallet

what to do when you lost your wallet

I have lost my wallet a couple of times in the past, so I hope to use that experience to help you. There are a few specific things to do right out of the gate. Following these steps can bring you closure in a hurry.

Try to find it.

First relax and think where you were when you know you had it last. Write down that information and then retrace your steps. Look in the least likely place possible. Look around the house; check the washer and dryer; check the last pants you wore; ask your spouse if they moved it for some what to do when you lost your walletreason. If you still have not found it, move outside the house.

Make a few calls

Make a list of where you went and call those places. Some or all may have a lost and found area, so you may get lucky here. Be sure you can fully describe the wallet as some places may ask for a description. Some may even open the wallet and ask you for your name and address or something. If you still have not had any luck, it is time for drastic measures.

Identity and personal information

If you have not found the wallet and more than a couple of hours has passed, you need to start calling places to cancel cards and salvage your information. Start with your bank and take care of your ATM card and/or checkbook. You may need to actually close the account and reopen it in some cases.

Lost or Stolen Wallet? Let TrustedID restore your peace of mind with our Lost Wallet Protection and $1,000,000 warranty

Alert your credit card companies that the card(s) have been either stolen or lost. This will save you from any charges incurred after the card went missing. The credit company may even cancel the card completely and issue a new one. This is the safest way to avoid credit card fraud.

One piece of information that may be lost is your social security card. A simple search will reveal where to go in your local area to get a replacement. The thing is that identity theft begins with this information. There is only one way to guard against this and that is to get a copy of your credit report and watch it for activity that you are not aware of. Make sure that new cards are not being opened using your SSN.

Of course, we all have pictures in our wallets. These can be easily retrieved but it is important that you do NOT keep photos that are one of a kind or that have significant value to you in your wallet. Some folks even keep an extra house key in their wallet. Well guess what? They now have a key to your castle AND the address of that castle on your driver’s license. If you have the key in there, change your locks ASAP.

Go to your local Division of Motor Vehicles and get a replacement license. This will probably cost a few bucks, but you need a license.

In conclusion, identity theft is rampant and you don’t have to be a victim. You need to safeguard your information as best you can as quick as you can. Keep your head, stay focused and take care of business. Grab a free copy of your credit report and keep watch for funny activity.
