Save Money on Car Expenses

Anyone who relies on their own vehicle as their primary source of transportation can attest to the toll a vehicle purchase and maintenance can have on your budget. For individuals living in areas where a ready form of public transportation is not an option, having a dependable car is necessary to get to and from work, the grocery store and all other places you frequent on a regular basis. The problem with needing a reliable vehicle is that the cost can quickly drain your budget which can be especially challenging in a tough economy. Here we look at ways you can save money on car expenses.

  • Think before you buy- When making a car purchase avoid making impulse purchases which may cost you more money down the road. Whether you are buying new or used, carefully examine your needs versus your wants. Too many people fall into the trap of buying more vehicle than they need and end up paying far too much over longer periods of time in an attempt to fit over sized car payments into the budget. Conversely, used cars do not always offer savings if you don’t do your research first. What may at first seem like a steal might turn out to be a bad deal if it costs you hundreds or thousands in repairs. When making your decision be sure to keep in mind the cost of repairing and insuring the type of vehicle you are considering.

  • Remember routine maintenance- Routine maintenance can also be called preventative maintenance in that it helps prevent bigger (i.e. more expensive) problems. Follow manufacturer directions for oil changes, tune-ups, etc to ensure your vehicle is running in tip top shape. Skimping on routine maintenance will almost always result in a major repair bill at some point later in time.

  • Do-it-yourself (when you can)- There are some things even those of us who are not mechanically inclined can handle. Checking tire pressure, replacing wiper blades and a series of other similar tasks can usually be accomplished with relative ease and do not require a mechanic nor the bill.

  • Find a quality repair shop- Car repairs are expensive. If your vehicle is still under warranty, the dealership will be the most cost effective choice. Vehicle repairs not covered by a warranty are generally less expensive at your local garage. Remember not all repair shops are created equally, therefore it is in your best interest to find one that you can trust and afford. Do this by asking friends, family and other people you trust for a recommendation. Most local repair shops have a reputation, either good or bad.

These are just a few of the ways you can reduce expenses resulting from car ownership. This is important in an economy where good money management skills are necessary to secure your financial future.
