In order to find financial freedom and truly leave debt behind, you have to change more than your money plans. You
literally have to change your money habits by changing how you think. In order to be successful, you first need to be ready and willing to change. While finances are about money, it is just as much about mentality and attitude.
Here are some tips to help you find the change you have been seeking for both your finances and your life:
Define Why You Want to Change
If you are only looking to improve your finances because a bill collector or creditor said you had to, change will likely not stick. However, if you have the internal motivation to make changes for yourself, you will likely find success. Make a list of the pros of living debt free and changing your life habits to define why you want to make the changes. Putting it in writing can be a motivator in itself.
Start Replacing Bad Habits with Good
It will take time for changes to become natural and incorporating a few small changes at a time is much better than trying to do it all at once. Identify your bad spending habits which you can better understand by tracking your spending and then work to correct them. For instance, if you tend to go shopping when you are bored leading you to spend money you don’t have, resist the impulse to hit the mall and do something beneficial instead like take a walk or visit the library. After you’ve mastered one change, move on to the next one.
Journal Your Actions/Learn Your Lesson
By writing down how things are progressing, you will be able to see better what is working and what is not. Only you can determine where you need to be. Trying different paths for getting there is the way to learn from your mistakes. If you make mistakes, just keep moving forward and learning as you go.
Do What Works for You
While friends and family can certainly be an inspiration and support system while you work on major life changes, they should not be the sole influence of how you change your life. You need to do what works for you and not feel pressured to do as others have done. Becoming debt free is no easy task and there is not one sure-fire way to find financial freedom for everyone.
Remember Nothing is Perfect
Any milestone should be celebrated no matter how big or small. While situations can always get better, nothing will ever be absolutely perfect. There is always room for improvement. Expect setbacks and be willing to be flexible throughout the many months of developing better spending habits. As long as you never give up, you can certainly find success changing your life and financial situation for good.
