Debt Bailouts From the Government

An increasing problem for consumers trying to eliminate debt is the confusion resulting from misleading advertisements. It seems this problem is growing in the debt settlement industry where some companies are implying they are associated with some type of government debt relief programs. Consumers who are weighed down with financial burdens often reach for whatever help is available, unfortunately in some cases this worsens their situation instead of making it better. Before accepting the “help” of companies that use savvy marketing and advertising, it is important to first research said company to determine if they can in fact help you resolve your financial problems.

The United States government is not offering debt relief programs to its citizens. Any company that uses marketing techniques that suggest otherwise are attempting to convince potential clients that the program offered is in some way associated with a government program that does not exist. If you look closely at websites and other marketing material, it is normally disclosed that the company is in fact a debt settlement company and not a part of a government sanctioned program. Unfortunately desperate consumers often gloss over these details and unknowingly enter into a program that may result in dire financial consequences. Knowing this, all consumers are urged to take their time when reviewing debt relief companies to avoid teaming up with a company that is unable to provide true financial assistance.

This is not to say that every debt settlement company is fraudulent, however in an industry saturated with consumer complaints it is imperative you know how to weed out the less savory characters. This process starts by educating yourself about the industry, process and consequences of debt settlement. Understanding that there is no government “bailout” for consumers suffering from high interest debt is the first step in recognizing a company that is trying to lead you astray. Include on your list of to-do’s before enrolling in a debt settlement program, a close examination of the company outside of the material offered. This may include contacting state Attorney General offices as well as Internet research to include the Better Business Bureau. The truth of the matter is this: consumers are basically on their own when it comes to resolving debt issues. Do not fall prey to an attractive package that offers no real results.

Debt settlement can work under very specific circumstances. It is not a one size fits all type of debt relief process, regardless of what you may read or hear on advertisements.
